Practise the Ruy Lopez: Steinitz Defense

The Steinitz Defense (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 d6), also called the Old Steinitz Defence, is a solid but passive and cramped way to meet the Ruy Lopez. Play Black's moves of the line from memory — 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 d6 — and the trainer plays White's replies; "Play the other side" turns it around.

"Drill all" adds the 5 named lines that continue it, such as Ruy Lopez: Steinitz Defense, Nimzowitsch Attack, Ruy Lopez: Steinitz Defense, Center Gambit, Ruy Lopez: Berlin Defense, Tarrasch Trap, Ruy Lopez: Steinitz Defense, Semi-Duras Variation.

Read about the line, its statistics on Lichess and Stockfish's evaluation on the Ruy Lopez: Steinitz Defense page, or pick another opening in the opening trainer.
